What Is Grey Melange Yarn?

Grey melange yarn is a yarn with a soft, multi-tonal grey (“heather”) appearance — the marled look of a classic grey-marl T-shirt or sweatshirt. In a polyester filament version, that heather effect is built into the yarn itself by combining filaments, not by dyeing a finished yarn.

How the grey melange effect is made

A melange (or “heather”) look comes from mixing components of slightly different shade or character so the eye blends them into a single tonal grey. There are two broad routes:

  • Spun melange blends dyed staple fibres (often cotton or poly/cotton) before they are spun into yarn.
  • Filament melange — what we spin — combines two continuous polyester filaments of differing character into one yarn. The grey is created by the combination itself, so it is consistent, repeatable, and does not wash or rub out the way a surface dye can.

Because the colour is structural rather than applied, a filament grey melange gives knitters a stable heather base that behaves predictably from lot to lot.
